Suicide/Self-Harm

2 comments:
Hi everyone, it's Juliet. <3 I posted this last week on my blog, and I thought you might enjoy it.

One person every 13.7 minutes kill themselves. In the world, there are about 750,000 suicides a year. For every one female suicide, there are over three male suicides.

These numbers are alarming and very frightening. No one out there should think that the world is better off without them, or that no one loves them or cares for them.

I know I can't change the minds of all the people that are feeling down, or that are wanting to self harm or commit suicide, but here is the number of the Suicide Prevention Hotline: (1-800-273-TALK) just in case there's anyone out there that stumbles upon this post, and needs it.

I don't think that suicide is an easy way out, or cowardly. I think that bullying is cowardly.. I will never understand for as long as I live why people want to hurt others so badly, or why it makes people feel good to bully others. I'm not saying I'm a saint and I've never judged anyone, but if I ever drove someone to self harm or kill themselves, I would be guilty for the rest of my life, and quite frankly, would probably think about hurting myself, too.

When I hear or read stories about failed attempts at suicide, I feel like crying. A lot of people that failed are so thankful that it didn't work, but a lot of them have brain damage or scars as a result.
I wish people knew how much they are loved, and even if you are really stressed or mad at the world, hurting yourself isn't the answer.

I have had quite a few friends that have cut because of stress or a family situation. I am so thankful that they have been honest with me about it, and stopped.
Here are some links to a couple really good songs about suicide/self harm. Sure, they aren't the happiest songs, but I really like them:
Loser by Three Doors Down
Ten Years Today by Bullet For My Valentine
Cemetery Drive by My Chemical Romance
My Chemical Romance is one of my favorite bands. Even if you're not a rocker (most people are surprised when they find out the music I listen to...) I really think you should listen to them sometime. They're amazing.

Here are some amazing pictures I found that really sum everything up:

I don't know why the words are cut off, but I'm sure you can tell what it's saying.
PEOPLE CARE.

I try to smile to everyone I see, too!

Pictures found on Google
I know that I'm just a person through a screen, but if anyone ever wants to talk and let it all out, I'm here for you.

Meme-Current Book

1 comment:
I've been seeing this meme everywhere where you flip to a random page of the book you are currently reading, pick two lines that don't spoil the story for anyone (but they're supposed to entice everyone to want to read that book). I'm going to do that, only not with my current book, because to be honest, it's not very good. And I've already read it quite a lot of times, and it's just not worth sharing.

So, I'm going to pick two lines from my favorite book in the entire world. It's a trilogy by Lauren Oliver called Delirium. I know I've talked about it on this blog a few times. Or more.

I read the first book in eighth grade, the second book in the trilogy, Pandemonium, came out last February, and the final book in the trilogy, something I've been waiting for for two years, comes out in a month. I'm going to pee my pants when I get my hands on a copy, I am SO EXCITED.

Except it's also one of those things where I don't want it to happen, because I know I'm going to finish the final book in a day. And then, those years of waiting will be over, I'll have finished the series, I'll cry (it's not the happiest story...), and then, I'll have to find another book to be obsessed with.

But, I do want every person in the entire world to read it, so I'm going to share a couple sentences from a random page of the SECOND book, Pandemonium. I would share from the first book, but I don't own a copy. But I'm going to get it from the library so I can rerererereread it, and then rerereread Pandemonium, so my mind is fresh as to what happened LAST YEAR.

Moving on, I am sharing two sentences from Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver, page 187.
"I take the shirt and rip off a long strip of fabric, trying to will away the memories that are pressing and resurging: I learned this from Alex. At one point, in another lifetime, he saved me when I was hurt."

In case you haven't read any of my previous posts of what Delirium is about, to sum it up simply, it takes place in the future, and everyone believes that love is a disease. You are cured, and selected a person to marry. I can't even describe how amazing this book is, (I will say it's more for girls than guys...) and I can't say it enough:

READ THE DANG BOOK.

Please.

Thank you kindly.
Oh, and don't be one of those CRAZIES that read series out of order. Some series don't matter, but this one absolutely DOES. Delirium is the first book, Pandemonium is the second, then the third I don't know because it comes out next month. Although, if I looked on Google I could probably find it in a second, but I'm way too lazy for that business.

I got Lauren Oliver to email me back twice. The first email was basically my "I'm your number one fan!" rant. The second one was clarifying whether or not Delirium would be made into a movie. The answer's yes. Just one more reason for you to read the book, because DON'T BE ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT WATCH THE MOVIE BEFORE READING THE BOOK. I WILL HURT YOU.

If you've read it, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE email me julietspurplesky@gmail.com. I am begging you. I really want to know your thoughts. Also, I need someone to discuss it with.

Directions:
Go to Amazon or your local library or Ebay or any online store or Borders or Barnes and Noble or another book store.
Buy the book.
Read it.
Enjoy it.
Love it.
Thank me for introducing you to it.

That is all.

Conquering Nanowrimo

3 comments:
Hi everyone! I'm back, with some tips on conquering Nanowrimo, a competition I believe every aspiring writer should enter.
This is my third year participating and I'm looking for my third win this year!  You can add me on Nanowrimo, I'm ilovepurple.

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, you can visit their website (click on Nanowrimo above) or read this short tidbit about it.
It's a month long noveling competition, starting November 1st and ending November 30th (so it starts in 10 days!!). You win if you write a 50,000 word (OR MORE!) novel in that period of time. It's really great to cure writers' block (see my last post, click here!) or to get experience with writing novels. I really recommend you do it if you want to be an author, and add me as a writing buddy, ilovepurple! :)

1.)  Make an outline. So, by this point, if you're participating, you should have a rough outline of chapters, or at least a basic idea of where you want your novel to go. Because it starts in ten days, I recommend you have a chapter outline, or at least your plot, character outlines, and conclusion written down somewhere. This will help you so you don't have to waste time during the month to think about what you want to happen next.

2.) DON'T EDIT. I CAN'T say this enough. While you're writing, don't stop to change ANYTHING. After the month is over, and you've successfully written 50,000 words, go back and edit it! (If you want copies from Createspace, you'll have six months to edit it!) Please don't waste time by changing things around (unless you want to add things in, of course!)

3.) No contractions! Don't, shouldn't, won't. NO!!! Do not, should not, will not. That's better. :) Separating words definitely makes a difference in your word count.

For those of you participating, good luck!
Please come visit me and my blog by clicking here.
And, I now have an Instagram! (Free app for ipods/iphones/android) Add me @apurplesky

Thanks!

How to Cure Writer's Block

4 comments:
Hi everyone!
It's Juliet again with my second post. You can check out my first post here (it's a bit from my novel in progress!) and read my blog here!

OK, so today I'm going to talk about a struggle that every writer goes through.

Writer's block. It's every author's nightmare, wouldn't you agree? It certainly is mine, and it happens to me all the time.

So what are some cures?

  1. Breaks. If you've been sitting at the computer or at your desk with a pencil in hand for longer than five minutes, and haven't written anything, take a break. Go eat some chocolate, watch America's Got Talent, do what you got to do to get your mind off of writing for a while. The times when I have a great idea are when I'm not constantly thinking about my work.
  2. Writing excercises. Look up some writing prompts on Google and get the writing juices a-flowing. Who knows, something you write in a prompt might be used in your work OR could give you an idea for a character, plot, etc.
  3. Written? Kitten and Write or Die. OK, so that sounds really threatening, but those are two great websites. The first one, Written? Kitten! (click on it above) Is where you set a word count and if you achieve that word count you get an adorable picture of kittens! Who wouldn't want that? Write or Die (click on it above) is what I use during Nanowrimo season when I absolutely HAVE to get 1500 words a day. You can set the level of consequences and strictness. If you stop writing in Gentle mode, a box will pop up to remind you to continue writing. Normal mode; a really annoying sound is played. Kamikaze mode? your words will start being deleted one by one so you have to keep writing or else! It's a great tool so you don't stop. Even if you keep writing crap, you can always edit it and more than likely, you'll get a great idea!
  4. Music. And no, I don't mean listen to a song and plagiarize all their lyrics. That's not what I mean at all. A great tip that I've learned on many writing websites is to listen to a song and try to create a character that you think of when listening to that song, or write a short story based on the song. This, once again, will be sure to get the writing juices in your brain flowing.
Thanks for reading, what tips do you have to cure writer's block?

Crystal Blue

4 comments:
Hi everyone! :) I'm Juliet and this is my first post on Blog for Joy, but hopefully I will be posting pretty frequently!
You can check out my blog, A Purple Sky, here! Thanks! :)
Here's a section of my novel-in-progress. I'll be posting more soon!

It’s not hard to imagine how you would feel if you lost the love of your life. In fact, people think about it all the time; the sadness, the anger. When it’s an awful accident, you’re meant to feel shocked. When it’s a long battle with cancer, you’re meant to feel frustrated.
But I didn’t lose him because of a freak accident or cancer.
            It was his choice.
This isn’t a story about how I lost my love, and my best friend. It’s a story about how he changed my life forever.

That day is still as clear to me as the crystal blue ocean water that only exists in ads for Sandals, Jamaica. Even now as I sit here almost four years later, I remember every detail and every word that was spoken on that gruesome day.
A shiver runs down my spine as I think about what happened, and, for the millionth time, what I could have done to stop it. My vision blurs as cool tears form in my eyes. I look down as one lands on my thigh, and then rolls off, leaving a trail on my leg. I close my eyes, trying to wish away the images in my head.
There’s blood pouring out of him as I watch three men from the corner of my eye fade into the foggy darkness. I hear sirens and see flashing lights everywhere I look. That’s always the moment when everything becomes clear, when I remember what’s about to happen.

And please remember, no plagiarism! Thanks!
